Should the mummies be opened?
Recently the Egyptian government and major Egyptologists open 59 mummy coffins in a public ceremony to hopefully encourage an increase in tourism to Egypt. Egyptian tourism had increased a lot since the Arab spring conflicts in the last decade, but now with the coronavirus pandemic tourism has once again decreased dramatically. This creates serious economic problems for Egypt and many other developing countries that rely on tourism for income.
However, some internet users have complained about the opening of the mummy caskets: Archaeologists have stated: "We are not going to stop digging,” Mustafa Al Waziri, Egypt’s most senior archaeologist, We are going to continue and very soon we will find something very special". This has led some observers to wonder if this will result in the curse of the pharaohs' like in many on the famous mummy movies. With 2020 already a very bad year, could the pharaohs' curse make it even worse?
