59 Ancient Mummies uncovered in Egypt
Archaeologists in Egypt have uncovered 59 mummies in at a site called Saqqara, some 30 miles south of the Egyptian capita, Cairo. These mummies and their coffins are in excellent condition according to the scholars uncovering them. They were hidden in the ancient necropolis located in Saqqara, which contains mummies dating from around 3000 BC to 500 AD, which is a very long stretch of time. Ancient Egyptians tried to hide tombs so that they would not be looted. Egyptians felt that the existence of people in the afterlife were connected to their physical bodies which were preserved by mummification. These new mummies were carefully hidden from looters behind sealed doors and some of the coffins were placed in a deep well. The government of Egypt likes to announce new archeological findings because they hope it will increase tourism to Egypt. In addition, a recently discovered mummy of a young child dating from the Roman period in Egypt, about 100 AD, has been reconstructed. See the articles and pictures below for more information:
