Achalinus zugorum: a new and iridescent (shiny and colorful) snake just discovered in Vietnam
Herpetologists study snakes, a fascinating but also somewhat risky occupation. As you might know, many more varieties of snakes live in warmer, tropical climates than in cooler climates like northern Illinois. Some tropical snakes are venomous and some are not. Most are afraid of human contact but will attack when disturbed. The herpetologists that discovered this new species of iridescent snake tramped through the jungles and rivers of northern Vietnam looking out for new species of reptiles and amphibians. It is difficult, hot and in many ways dangerous and uncomfortable work, but these scientists are rewarded when they discover a new species of animal like Achalinus zugorum. This snake lives its life underground and under foliage (trees and leaves) and its scales are irregularly shaped with skin in between its scales. In addition its most noticeable characteristic is its shiny and rainbow-colored head. It is an ancient variety of snake and different from many modern snakes because it developed its own branch at an early point in time in the earth's history. Herpetology is just one of the many interesting fields of zoological (about animals) study. Animals are interesting for many young people and it is important to remember that dogs, cats and mammals are just a few of the many interesting you could learn about and study on your own and in college!
Question: would you like to study about animals in college?
