The deadly polar vortex is returning!
Chicago during the polar vortex
The dreaded polar vortex is a circular 'river' of air that rotates around the arctic circle high above the earth's surface. It is composed of frigid air that normally stays far to the north of Waukegan and the Midwest. But periodically the polar vortex is disrupted and instead of a circular pattern, its path becomes wavy which means that part of it moves southward over our area. When this happens we can have a period of colder than normal temperatures and major snowstorms. Since we are already learning online from home, we don't have to worry about going to school during a polar vortex invasion, but we still have to be careful from the cold temperatures outside. This means that in the next few weeks we may begin to have colder temperatures and more snow. So far this winter has been pretty mild, but that may be about to change.
You can see in this map that the polar vortex may settle in over our area

Have a good weekend and stay warm and cozy!
