Gun-waving St. Louis couple indicted; fair or unfair?
The couple in the photo above are the McCloskeys, a wealthy St. Louis Missouri couple that live in a suburb. On June 28, 2020, protestors entered their street, breaking through gates to get to the mayor of St. Louis' home, located on the same street. According to the McCloskeys, the protestors were making threats of violence and arson, so they took their guns and defended their home. On the other hand the protestors say they were not violent and that they felt threatened by the McCloskeys waving guns. The charges against the McCloskeys state: "On June 28, Mark McCloskey, 63, pointed an AR-15 rifle at protesters and Patricia McCloskey, 61, wielded a semiautomatic handgun, placing protesters in fear of injury." The McCloskeys are both lawyers themselves and are Republicans. Mark McCloskey says: "Every single human being that was in front of my house was a criminal trespasser. They broke down our gate. They trespassed on our property. Not a single one of those people is now charged with anything. We’re charged with felonies that could cost us four years of our lives and our law licenses." It is true that although nine of the protestors were charged with trespassing, the charges were dropped by city counselors. Consequently the McCloskeys claim they are being unfairly prosecuted. On the other hand the Circuit Attorney Kimberly M. Gardner, a Democrat, believes the McCloskeys were violating the rights of the protestors. See the articles to learn more:
