They're back

Tasmanian Devils are reintroduced to Australia

Tasmanian Devils are unique marsupial (pouched) carnivores that live on the island of Tasmania, off the south coast of Australia. Many of us are aware of them because of the famous Warner Bros cartoon character called the Tasmanian devil. The real life creatures are sort of cute, but are also quite ferocious, as in the cartoon. They have a kind of wild scream and they have some of the most powerful jaws among animals. Their screams can be heard a mile away. 3,000 years ago the devils lived not only on Tasmania, but also on the Australian mainland. They became extinct there due to being hunted by a native Australian wild dogs called dingoes. However, a conservation group call Aussie Ark is reintroducing them to Australia this year in a carefully planned process. Aussie Ark hopes the devils will control the populations of wild (feral) cats and other animals that threaten Australian wildlife. Tasmanian devils are not dangerous to humans or livestock but will defend themselves, and of course, they have a powerful bite that can cause serious injury to people.
