Election special

It's finally here: the election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden!

Who do you support? Each candidate has strengths and weaknesses and it is up to us to make up our own minds on who to support. This year millions of people have voted by mail and in early voting. Millions and millions more will vote in person tomorrow, despite the pandemic. All of these different methods of voting mean it will likely take many hours and even days to determine which candidate actually won this election. The Chicago Tribune published this statement which contains important information about the election and waiting for results:

Early turnout is huge. (Howdy, Texas.)
• Mail-in ballots are being cast at a record level, including in key battleground states, and different states count those mail-in votes in different ways.
• Some officials predict long lines on Election Day itself.
• And, of course, it’s 2020.

All that means that some results will take days to count, not hours.

No matter who wins the biggest race of them all, President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden, we very well may not know the result on election night itself.

What’s more, a candidate winning or declaring victory on election night, even a candidate winning handily in some areas, could end up losing, even losing soundly, when the final vote is counted and certified.

That does not mean fraud. It just means that every valid vote — whether cast early, by mail or at the last minute on Election Day — has to be counted.

Editor’s note: What to expect on Election Day, and beyond

Unfortunately because of the very strong feelings about both candidates and the pandemic as well as the social unrest of this summer and autumn, there is the possibility of further unrest and possible violence during this election. Please be safe both from political unrest as well as the Covid 19 virus on election day.
